As a look ahead to September, our meeting of September 28 th will be a screening of a documentary movie “ Paris 1919” based on the book of the same name by Margaret MacMillan. (Of course, reading the book is highly encouraged.) This film is an excellent follow up to Michael Oren’s “Power, Faith and Fantasy” that we just completed reviewing as much of the seeds of today’s Middle East problems were sown during the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Viewing the documentary is a high value experience as it only takes a bit more than 90 minutes to gain a lot of knowledge about the foundations of many of today’s frictions in the Middle East.
An excerpt from the back cover of the DVD case:
Following the movie itself, we will listen to what Prof. MacMillan has to say about the peace conference. Her lineage is interesting in itself as her maternal grandmother was a daughter of David Lloyd George, the P.M. of Great Britain and one of the principals of the conference. It is very interesting to hear her comment on the actions of her great-grandfather and his contemporaries, Georges Clemenceau, Woodrow Wilson and others.
