Adult Education Update

********* Adult Education News ***********

The group wanted to continue discussing and reading about “Jewish DNA” since the two books, “Jacob’s Legacy” and “Abraham’s Children”, we reviewed in October evoked much enthusiasm.  For November we will meet on the 29th at 7 PM in the library to finish our discussion of the October book selections and review another book, The “Journey of Man” by Spencer Wells.

Wells writes in a very fluid and easy to understand style, so much so that one might not believe that he is one of the leading geneticists in the world.  You’ll find this book to be a pleasure to read.  Quoting Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza of Stanford University, “Written with much verve, easy to read, and up-to-date on many important developments.”

Cavalli-Sforza is also one of the top geneticists.  He published “Genes, Peoples, and Languages” in 2000.  For those who are interested or have some background in linguistics or have language skills beyond English, you will likely find this book extremely interesting.  While this is not on the adult education reading list you may want to stimulate your mind a bit further and learn about the things that genetics, archeology, and linguistics tend to have in common.  This is a great book to read while staying warm during the coming winter.

As in October, we will also have on display actual DNA data, charts, and maps from one of our members who has participated in DNA testing as part of genealogy research.

If you’re curious about the adult education program take a look at the Temple’s web site at www.templeisraelmiller.org and some of what we’ve covered in the archive.
